Montreal rock / metal band Deadly Apples – frontman / lyricist Alex Martel and drummer / composer Antoine Lamothe – has forged a reputation for its fierce, unpredictable, and high energy live performances often culminating with Martel diving – and drowning – into the crowd. As rock music – and society – has become increasingly safe and bland, the French-Canadian band has received praise for bringing back the danger and unpredictability to unsuspecting audiences.
Accompanied on stage by a touring guitarist and keyboardist / dancer, the Great White North act has showcased its intensity in arenas and stadiums around the globe – United States, Mexico, South America, Europe, Japan – on high-profile tours with Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson, Korn, Deftones and Rammstein, as well as Main Stage slots on festivals such as Hellfest Open Air, Knotfest, Vans Warped Tour, Hell & Heaven Fest and Resurrection Fest.
On their new full-length album DISTRESS, Deadly Apples push the limits of their catchy sound to every extreme: darker, deeper, and heavier, yet their most accessible work yet. Interlaced with cinematic atmospheres, poignant melodies, singular screams, gritty analog synths, pummeling drum beats, abrasive guitars, delicate pianos and heartfelt lyrics, DISTRESS is a unique, relevant and modern take on a classic genre that they made their own.
Recorded in Los Angeles, the album was produced by Lamothe, mixed by Ben Grosse (Marilyn Manson) and mastered by Tom Baker (Nine Inch Nails), with NIN alumni Danny Lohner performing the guitars / bass and Richard Patrick of Filter providing guest vocals. Early pre-production work was also completed with Michael Beinhorn (Korn).
Deadly Apples is back and will fucking destroy anyone standing in its path.
THE DISTRESS IS COMING…………………………………………..
The day of music kicked off with Canada’s Deadly Apples. The industrial outfit it has to be said blew me away, proving beyond doubt that you MUST see the early bands on a festival bill to ensure that you catch one of the next big names before they have ascended. Deadly Apples took no prisoners, dominated the stage and with vocalist Alex Martel even crowd surfing during their last number much to the delight of the many who had come to the Pandæmonium stage early in the day.

Alex Martel is an exceptional frontman, the type of whom very few move around on concert stages today: he adds to the ranks of unpredictable, unkillable rock'n'roll beasts, who transcend the stage into some other state of consciousness, and thus the production is raised to a higher dimension. The imaginative, impulsive throwing of the microphone stands back and forth seemed life-threatening even when seen from below. Right at the beginning he climbed down into the pit, then at the end of the show, he went to the sound board, then crowdsurfed back to the stage. Meanwhile, he was jumping, running, spinning, yelling, he really didn't spare himself. There’s no question that they have a chance to make a big breakthrough.

“One stage, one punch” seems to be the keyword this Sunday morning since the group Deadly Apples, the first band to set foot on Mainstage 1 today, gathered an impressive audience considering the time. Suffice to say that an enlightened fanbase had to wait for Alex Martel and Antoine Lamothe (accompanied by session musicians on this set) in full force. Throughout the concert, both the singer and the keyboardist did not spare themselves, jumping everywhere, performing breakdance figures, pouring liters of water on their heads in the middle of colored smoke. At the end of the set the singer went to crowd surf into the audience, the keyboardist grabbed the Quebec flag from a spectator and ran all over the photo pit with it.

Apparently, on the Rob Zombie - Marilyn Manson tour, they really warmed up the audience in America, so there was no way I could miss them, to see if they will make their mark here as well. In the end, the guitar-vocals-sampler-drums quartet brought what I expected. The singer kept coming and going and destroyed the microphone stands in a big way to the delight of the roadies, the sampler sometimes danced so much that even my wife, who has been dancing for a long time, highlighted it as a clever visual element. It’s rare to see an opening band accompanied by such atmospheric lights. Deadly Apples delivered perfectly what was needed, during the last song and finally before Korn, the frontman who turned around in the audience received plenty of words of praise.

To start the day off right, what could be better than Quebec industrial metal with Deadly Apples. The combo is also the only group from Quebec at Hellfest. And it’s also the band’s first concert in France. Musically, we feel the very good influences of industrial rock pillars such as Rob Zombie, Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson. If the music is quite dark and often very cathartic, singer Alex Martel displays an enormous joie de vivre on his face and takes part in a crowd bath at the end of the set. A group to rediscover during their next visit to France!

Finding them on the bill had a very special meaning for us and from the first seconds hearing this mixture of industrial metal and alternative metal on the Main Stage provides a rare satisfaction and pleasure. Something nasty and unhealthy early in the morning feels good! Electronics, big rhythms that hit in the stomach, a guy who spits his guts: Deadly Apples knows how to talk to us (Self-Inflicted Oppression, again, again!). On stage, Alex Martel is possessed and the guy on the keyboards whose name we don't know but whose impressive dance numbers we remember. All this ends with a pleasant crowd bath and an emotional speech in his magnificent accent.

It was the Canadian band Deadly Apples who had the honor of starting, and they did not disappoint. Enough fury was what was needed to prepare us for the rest of the day.
-MDX Portugal, July 4, 2022
From the moment Deadly Apples hit the stage it was obvious this was going to be a great show. The band’s live keyboardist and dance artist dances on to the stage with aggressive yet graceful acrobatics as he moves towards a keyboard. I feel the choreography is unique in the industry and the talent really sets the band apart. We see the rest of the band take their places, in particular lead vocalist Alex Martel as he takes center stage and pours water on himself. Don’t underestimate this band… they are heavy and aggressive! Drummer Antoine Lamothe hits hard, I thought at times he was going to break his drum kit. After performing song “Further” the crowd is obviously into the French-Canadian band, and I heard several people commenting “that was badass”.
-Global AZ Media, November 9, 2019
Deadly Apples definitely brought their A game to this show here tonight. They kicked the night off with high energy and had an electric stage presence, putting on a helluva show, more appropriate for a headliner than for an opening band. Front-man Alex Martel’s vocals were strong from beginning to end, as was his powerful commanding of the stage. The fans continued yelling and getting hyped up as the band continued to play through the rest of their set, setting the night to a frantic and energetic start.
-Sonic Perspectives, August 22, 2018
Most remarkable to me about Deadly Apples’ performance was the charisma display. Martel is a frontman that alternately sings, screams and growls, regularly getting in the face of those in the first row; he did a stage-dive during the set-closing song. Lamothe may have a chair behind his sideways-facing drum kit, but he spent a lot of the show standing and directly interacting with the crowd. Despite Deadly Apples performing in the daylight, the Montreal act definitely won over new fans as a result of its Jones Beach performance, this writer included.
-The Hype Magazine, August 8, 2018
Martel is a high energy performer who sang with authority while whipping his microphone cord around. He had a slew of water bottles that he opened to pour on himself, the drum kit or whatever else he felt like dousing. I think the band opened up some eyes with their unique sound and all were much appreciative of the fans who gave the band their attention through their set.
-Backstage Axxess, August 17, 2018
Deadly Apples served as an early opener for the mega-lineup, bringing a Canadian-metal aesthetic to the crowd, whom eagerly lapped up the music. The quartet had an understated but magnetic performance that seemed to be a perfect precursor, but the next act would fall off instead.
-Glide Magazine, August 21, 2018
The co-headliners relied on Montreal-based act Deadly Apples, who were blessed with the sole opening slot, to kick off the concert. The four-piece, fronted by dreadlocked founder Alex Martel, stormed onto the stage with a heavy, sampled-laced, set. The bad weather alert did not hinder the frontman from whipping the mic cord around, throwing the mic stand, and entering the photographer’s pit before ultimately diving into the audience.
-QRO Mag, August 8, 2018
Canadian rockers, Deadly Apples, opened the show with a high energy set delivering a mix of industrial rock and electronic sound. After a hiatus, they’re making moves and exploring a more diverse sound which is introduced in their new album, Petty.
-Rock Revolt Magazine, August 1, 2018
Both acts along with the opener, Montreal’s Deadly Apples – playing its first U.S. show in eight years – got the tour off to an exciting start. Most everything was solidly executed, from the staging to the sound mix.
